Robot Helps People Get Dressed

Robot Helps People Get Dressed Robot Helps People Get Dressed Robot Helps People Get DressedEvery January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, wzu siche some 200,000 business leaders and forward thinkers gather to view the newest technologies, there is always interest in when robots as versatile household assistants may become reality. Thus far journalists typically report that despite all the flashy gadgets and promises made, the feasibility of a multi-purpose household robot to serve as a reliable and affordable butler-chef-cleaner-fetcher-etc. is much further in the future than many would imagine. That doesnt mean engineers arent making considerable progress in robotics in areas they believe will make life easier and better, especially for the more than 1 million Americans who need extra help in performing everyday physical tasks, such as older adults, wounded veterans, and people who have suffered a stroke or debilitating injury. In May, researchers from Georgia Tech prese nted a paper, Deep Haptic Model Predictive Control for Robot-Assisted Dressing, at the International Conference on Robotics Automation about a robot they created that may help people who require daily physical assistance getting dressed. The robot uses haptics, rather than vision, to help it guide a hospital gown onto a persons hand, around the elbow, and onto the shoulder. For You Robots Make Self-Repairing Cities PossiblePR2 helps a human participant get into a hospital gownThe work is being done in Associate Professor Charlie Kemps healthcare robotics lab, using a Willow Garage PR2 research robot. The lead Georgia Tech Ph.D. student on the team, Zackory Erickson, said the robot taught itself to slide a hospital gown on a persons arm by analyzing nearly 11,000 simulated examples to learn what it feels like to be the human receiving assistance. From this simulation of both successes and failures, the robot learned to estimate the optimal force. Doing a similar number of trials on h umans could have been dangerous as well as very time-consuming, Erickson says. However, one of the biggest engineering challenges was setting up a simulation the robot could learn from and still transfer to the real world, he says. Simulation is a very crude approximation of the real world. When you run a simulation, you have to model whats going to happen in the real world, Erickson says. The team chose haptics as the sensorial method and simulation for learning for a couple of reasons. One of the challenging aspects of robots helping with dressing is that they cant directly binnensee whats happening since clothing typically hides a persons body, Kemp says. Another challenge is that doing a good job depends on the forces felt by the person. Too much force can result in discomfort. In the real world, our robot doesnt have direct access to what a person is feeling. Yet in the simulated world where our robot learns, it can directly measure the forces applied to the person. He notesthat t he team chose a hospital gown because its a widely used standard clothing item in healthcare and that many steps of dressing are similar to pulling a tube of material over a body part. After the simulated learning, the robot moved on to performing the action on humans, which took about 10 seconds.Erickson sayswhat makes this work differently from past efforts is that the robot takes a human perspective. Other work typically takes a robot-centric approach where the machine thinks about its actions and how its going to succeed. It doesnt take into consideration what impact its going to have on the person. As the robot is pulling the gown on someones body, its trying to estimate based on what it feels on its fingertips, what is the person feeling on his or her body, he says.As part of the learning, the robot can predict the consequences of moving the gown in different ways. Some motions made the gown taut, pulling hard against the persons body. Other movements slid the gown smoothly. T he robot uses these predictions to select motions that comfortably dress the arm, Erickson says. The researchers also varied the timing of the robots thinking and actions to allow it to think as much as a fifth of a second into the future while strategizing about its next move. Less than that caused the robot to fail more often.Kemp is happy with the progress and is optimistic that some of the approaches and principles will be broadly applicable wherever robots are intelligently interacting with people and the world. Weve taught a robot to predict the physical implications of its actions during a complex physical process, he says. The work has also shown that you dont have to have an incredibly high-fidelity, physics-based simulator to teach a robot how to do useful things, he says. One of the challenges is how to strike that balance between the fidelity of the simulation and the computational requirements. But there is still much to be done. Dressing is a much more complex task than s ome other activities of daily living Kemps lab has worked on, such as shaving or feeding. In terms of dressing, weve worked with a hospital gown and putting one sleeve of one arm of the gown on a persons arm. You can imagine there are still a ways to go with just that task. Were working on more on that, Kemp says. The team is also looking at some other simulation-based approaches to facilitate testing with people with disabilities.Thats something extremely important because just as testing in the real world is very important, if you actually want people with disabilities to benefit, you have to test it with people with disabilities. Otherwise you dont know. More broadly, Im optimistic that in the long run, robots can help other people manage in their daily lives, Kemp says. Maybe help people that are just a bit tired and want help around the house.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer.Read MoreInsect-Sized Robot Takes FlightRobots Enhance Artists VisionCreative Teaching Prepares St udents for Engineering For Further DiscussionMore broadly, Im optimistic that in the long run, robots can help other people manage in their daily lives. Listening to Women#8217;s Guts

Listening to Women#8217;s Guts Listening to Women#8217;s Guts A new study from CareerBuilder paid attention to the persistent feelings of female workers.   Although these interviewed employees did not always have access to all the facts, many strongly suspected that their male counterparts received significantly more money and respect than they did. According to the study, thirty-eight percent of female workers said they feel they are paid less than male counterparts with the same skills and experience, up from 34 percent in 2008 when the survey was last conducted, and up from 31 percent in 2003. Also, the nagging feeling of injustice is not limited to paychecks.   An even greater number of women think that men have more career advancement opportunities within their organizations.     Women were also likely to feel like men were more frequently recognized for their achievements.   A little praise and gratitude can go a long way, but apparently, women are expected to continue along without the same amount of recognition. Women suspected that among the reasons men were more likely to receive better positions was because men sought after bonding with management.   According to CareerBuilders press release, one-third of women attributed the disparity in pay and career advancement to the fact that they dont rub elbows or schmooze with management as much as men.

Stuart, Associate Professor of Management at Bentley University, answered WalletHub’s question about “the pros and cons of living in a diverse state.”“Theoretically, the pros include factors such as a more diverse economy and, a wider array of talent and skill sets among the labor force. Such factors would seem to support entrepreneurship and other social and economic innovation. Theoretically, the cons include factors such as difficulty finding common ground with regard to social and economic priorities (policy) due to divergent values. Socio-economic diversity can strain public resources, bring attention to economic disparity, and foster discord among groups,” Stuart told the site.

Four Must Haves for a Strong Cover Letter

Four Must Haves for a Strong Cover Letter Four Must Haves for a Strong Cover Letter As a leading cover letter writing service, ResumeSpice has seen firsthand how a strong cover letter can set a candidate apart. A strong cover letter includes a few key essentials: The hiring manager’s name. Don’t write the letter “To Whom It May Concern.” Instead, address it directly to the hiring manager (double check that you’ve spelled their name correctly). If the name isn’t included in the job description, you should still be able to find it online or with a quick call to the company. When you make this extra effort â€" and the letter is actually addressed to the specific hiring manager â€" it’s going to stand out relative to all the other letters with generic salutations. A focus on the employer. Many job candidates make the mistake of rehashing their resume details in their cover letters. Dont make that mistake. Your letter should be about the value you can offer the company, not about regurgitating your background information. Placing yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager, review the job description again. Read through the company website. And then ask yourself what the hiring manager needs for the person in this role to be successful. Make a list and use it as a guide as you’re writing your cover letter. Enthusiasm. When you submit a cover letter that sounds like you copied and pasted it from the web, it’s not going to get the attention of the hiring manager. Instead, cut through the clutter with a little enthusiasm. That doesn’t mean you need to profess your love for the company. It does, however, mean explaining what excites you most about the position. Accomplishments. A cover letter is not the place to simply state that you’re qualified for a position. Use the opportunity to demonstrate that you’re more qualified than other candidates. Offer one or two specific examples of past accomplishments that are most relevant to the job opening. These should showcase your proven track record and make your more memorable when the hiring manager is evaluating candidates to potentially interview.   For many job candidates, writing a cover letter can be a struggle. If that’s true for you, let the cover letter writing experts at ResumeSpice help. We can work with you to best describe what makes you uniquely qualified for a particular role, all so you can stand out from the crowd and secure an interview. Call 832.930.7378 today to learn more.

6 ways to control emotional eating during the holidays

6 ways to control emotional eating during the holidays 6 ways to control emotional eating during the holidays It’s that time again â€"we’re burning the candle at both ends: trying to finish up our end-of-year work all while preparing for the holidays. Whether it’s shopping, decorating, traveling or navigating family squabbles about where you will be celebrating, while all this turmoil is happening, it’s easy to lose your healthy eating patterns. We’ve asked experts how to curb emotional eating and so you keep walking a healthy line during the holidays.Have a game plan before arriving at a holiday partyIt’s easier to make decisions before arriving starving and anxious to a party.“Call your host and ask, ‘What are you serving?’ Then, map out your entire culinary game plan â€" from appetizers to desserts,” recommends Danine Fruge, MD, ABFP, medical director at Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami. “It’s far better to make these decisions at home, when you’re calm and rationale and not experiencing the stress of unhealthy temptations.”Cut back on boozeWe all know family tensions can ramp up over the holidays, and one drink too many can take some of us places we really don’t want to go, says Dr. Fruge. So, keep a close eye on your alcohol intake.“Drinking less also means you’re less likely to go overboard on the bacon-wrapped smokies and fruitcake,” she adds.Keep yourself occupiedSummer Yule, a registered dietician in Avon, CT, says to keep a busy box filled with things to do next to the refrigerator to ward off emotional eating.“Fill this box with whatever you would like. It could be a knitting project that you have neglected to finish, or a book you’ve been meaning to read, thank you notes you’d like to write, a scrapbooking project, or a DVD you’d like to watch,” Yule says. “Instead of mindlessly reaching into the fridge when you aren’t really hungry, grab something to do from the box.”Not only are you helping to curb mindless eating behaviors with this technique,  but you are also getting some things done that you enjoy. “It is a double win,” Yule adds.Allow a sugar quotaFor stress-eaters, the holidays are most likely a trigger.“Sweets tend to be one of the most consumed foods when emotionally eating,” says Sarah Thacker, a health coach and therapist in New York. “During the holiday season it seems as though we are constantly surrounded by homemade treats, candies, and dessert with most meals, making it difficult to resist.”According to the American Heart Association, says Thacker, women should have no more than 24 grams of added sugar per day and men no more than 36 grams of added sugar per day.“When you pay attention to how many grams of sugar are in certain foods, you can make more empowered decisions about what to eat and how to ‘spend’ your sugar grams each day,” she continues. “During the holiday season, you might set it slightly higher than this or make certain days exceptions, but just not every single day.”Thacker states when you predetermine how much sugar you will take in daily, you are more likely to pay attention to the amount of sugar in foods and more likely to make informed decisions. “This allows to you to feel strong and in control rather than weak, shameful and deprived,” she adds.Make choices on how you WANT to feelThacker says when you make your decisions based on how you want to feel, you are more likely to make an empowered and positive choice in the moment. Start each day with asking yourself “How do I want to feel today?”Says Thacker: “If you want to feel strong, ask yourself with each decision you make about food, ‘Does this choice support how I want to feel?’ If no, you have an opportunity to make an empowered choice to say ‘no’ to that particular food while choosing to say ‘yes’ to yourself, ‘yes’ to how you want to feel. There is no food that tastes as good as it feels to show up for yourself and making empowered choices.”Focus on vegetablesAt holiday meals (and all throughout the year) aim for a t half of your plate to be loaded with vegetables, says Thacker.“When you do this, you are not only getting in the nutrition you need, vegetables will help to fill you up,” she says. “This plan also leaves less space for the sugary foodsâ€"both on your plate and in your belly.”Furthermore, she says when you are well nourished you tend to have fewer cravings which allows you to resist the second helping of pie.

6 Ways to Overhaul Your Reputation at Work

6 Ways to Overhaul Your Reputation at Work 6 Ways to Overhaul Your Reputation at Work Changing how people think of you is no easy feat, but if it comes to your attention that you have a less-than-stellar reputation at work, it’s natural to want to do something about it. Maybe you were passed over for a big opportunity, or a colleague let you in on the fact that others aren’t as impressed by your ability to work on a team as you’d hoped. Regardless of the exact situation, the best thing you can do here is damage control. After all, what people think of the quality of your work and how you act while doing it are, in most cases, the biggest determining factors of whether you move up professionally . So what action can you take if you realize your rep is hurting you at work? First, don’t stress - you have options. One thing a lot of people don’t consider when trying to deal with a not-so-great professional reputation is that their personality might not naturally line up with the industry they’re in. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost - just that adjustments need to be made. “When I left the startup world to start working in corporate America, a lot of people told me that I was cocky,” says Leonard Kim, managing partner of InfluenceTree , a personal branding accelerator that teaches you how to position your brand, get featured in publications, and grow your social media following. Obviously, being considered overconfident isn’t exactly the work rep most people are going for. “I couldn’t understand what they were talking about, because I needed time to figure out the differences between how corporate America and startups worked,” he explains. Once he put effort into discerning what was different about the two work environments, he was able to adjust his behavior to be more appropriate for the corporate world. The key here? If you think personality traits may be to blame for your bad rep, do your best to turn things around quickly, because Kim says these types reputation issues tend to follow you, even if you make adjustments to your behavior. And if you see that people aren’t changing the way the think about you in your current role? “Learn what you can and leave so you can be better equipped for your next role,” he advises. Many people feel that they’ve developed a bad reputation at work based on one specific incident. Maybe you messed up on a big project and colleagues are now reluctant to hand work off to you, or you threw a coworker under the bus without really thinking about what the repercussions might be. “In order to recover from a mistake, you have to take responsibility for what you did, then apologize and try to make things right,” Kim says. “You can still recover if you are humble, genuine, and sincere with your apology and start shifting your actions to prove you won’t do something similar again. Not many people take responsibility for their actions, so when you do, you will be seen as someone who holds themselves accountable and can be trusted in the long-term.” That’s a rep you definitely do want to develop. Behaviors that damage your reputation tend to creep up when you’re going through something difficult personally or are feeling burned out . “The hardest thing about working at a nine-to-five is that you have to be on top of your game for an entire eight hours a day, five days a week,” Kim says. “That’s a lot of time where you are being analyzed and looked at for what you do.” The solution? Use your PTO wisely. For example, “if you just broke up with your significant other and you feel down and easily agitated, take some time off so you’re not berating others at work. If you haven’t taken a vacation for an extended period of time and are reaching burnout, go on a vacation. If you’re falling behind on your sleep schedule, call out sick, rearrange your habits and get your life back in order.” Strategically utilizing your time off will allow you to be a more positive presence in the office, which can work wonders for your reputation. On that note, Kim says that one of the simplest things you can do to improve your rep is to smile more - in a genuine way, of course. If you think it’s annoying to be told to smile more when you’re not a naturally smiley person, you’re right. It is. But it also works. “You wouldn’t believe how far a smile can go, especially in a working environment,” Kim notes. “It’s so easy for people to get burnt out and dread coming into the office . If the culture of the office starts to sway this way, or has always been this way, and you’re smiling and cheery each day, your colleagues and superiors will wonder what you’re doing.” This invites conversation, which is an excellent opportunity to develop your relationships with colleagues and showcase the projects you’re working on. “Smiles are also contagious, so if you’re smiling, others will smile and associate happy thoughts with you,” Kim adds. The simplest way to overhaul what others think about you? Ask for their suggestions. “Think about the last time you were in a meeting,” Kim suggests. “Take a mental look around at all the people in there: The Joker. The Gossiper. The Suck-Up . The True Leader. You see them all. You know how they interact in the office. You sized them up and put a label on them. Guess what? They did the exact same thing to you.” In other words, you know what their personal brand is - so why not ask them what they think yours is? Kim suggests the following exercise: Find two stacks of Post-It notes. With the first set, write out as many of your professional and personal qualities as you can think of, including how you’d like to be perceived in the office. Then, pass out the second stack to your colleagues and ask them to write down (honestly) how you’re perceived in the office. “Compare where you are seen now to where you want to go and you will be able to see what areas you need to work on,” Kim says. “But first, you have to eliminate the core problems to your image” - so any Post-Its bearing negative descriptors should be dealt with first. Another approach would simply be to write down how you’d like to be seen at work, ask a few trusted colleagues and potentially your manager to sit down and discuss your overall reputation, then do a similar type of comparison to see where you stand and how you can move forward. What you do outside the office also has a huge impact on your work rep. “You don’t want to limit what you do to just what is being done inside your company. You want to showcase what you do outside of your company as well,” Kim says. In a sense, you want to develop social proof for yourself - that phenomenon when when you see a line outside of a business and you stop to see what’s going on, or when you see one restaurant that’s packed when the other is empty and you’d rather eat in the packed one. “You’re inclined to move toward the venue that others are validating,” Kim explains. The same concept applies to the workforce. “The more outside accomplishments you achieve, the more attractive you look when it comes time for a promotion.” If you’re not sure where to start, Kim suggests displaying your knowledge and insights on your social media accounts, content syndication websites, and maybe even your own blog . This allows you to boost your own reputation as well as your company’s, for a mutually beneficial effect that only adds to your appeal.

Best Jobs for Introverts Apply Today!

Best Jobs for Introverts â€" Apply Today! Best Jobs for Introverts - Apply Today! Let’s face it - many occupations rely on extroverted traits for success. For introverted job seekers, this can make finding the right position intimidating . If you are aiming for work that fits best with your life, then you want to look for a position that allows for your professional abilities to shine without being hindered by external stressors in the workplace. Luckily, just as there are jobs that reward outgoing employees, there are also opportunities that are best for those who prefer not to be the social butterfly of the office. Occupations such as park ranger, truck driver and software engineer allow for uninterrupted periods of focus and solitude where introverts can thrive , yet still have opportunities for socializing with clients and coworkers. Check out the best jobs for introverts below! Hanging out with the animal kingdom may be more attractive to some than the chit-chat around the water cooler during a work break. As observers of animals in their natural habitats, wildlife biologists have the opportunity to conduct their daily work among their research focus. Being in the field also involves plenty of time outdoors, as opposed to being trapped in the social environment of the office. The individual nature of software engineering is perfect for introverts who prefer projects that prioritize solo work. The flexible culture of many tech companies also means workers can sometimes alternate between days in the office and working from home or other places where they feel at ease. Working as a mechanic and in other trade occupations (welding, machining, etc) provides ample time for independent work, allowing you to focus deeply on the task at hand. Depending on your workplace, introverts also can look forward to minimal distraction from customers and chit-chat with coworkers. As a preserver of ancient and precious artifacts, a conservator’s focus is often on the objects they work with, not their coworkers. More withdrawn individuals may find relief from typical work environments that reward extroversion in the secluded setting of conservation, which encourages calm and focus. Web content writers and freelancers are in demand, and many of these opportunities allow for employees to be partially and fully remote. Even if you do end up in an office space, the emphasis on individual work allows for plenty of solitary time. Lots of time on the open road may be paradise for introverts. For those individualistic workers who can hold themselves accountable for their own work schedule and prefer long stretches of time alone are in luck: truck driver is one of the most in-demand positions in today’s job market. If you’re interested in medical work but intimidated by the heavy social element of jobs like nurse or administrator, medical coding may be a suitable alternative. By translating doctors’ notes and recommendations into code, medical coders take on an important role in patient care without the demand of constant interaction. Graphic design is a perfect opportunity for self-reliant artists to release their independent creativity. Remote opportunities for graphic design are also some of the fastest growing of any job position. Prefer the calm of the great outdoors to the distractions of a too-cramped office? In their position, park rangers can find the solace and open space to pursue their passion for nature. Rangers have opportunities for social interaction through visitor education and assistance, along with the chance to take a breather in the natural environment. Are you an employer? Not being a jerk is more important than how well you can do the job

Not being a jerk is more important than how well you can do the job Not being a jerk is more important than how well you can do the job A popular narrative put forth by business schools and Steve Jobs worshippers is that jerks get ahead and prosper because we will permit an employee’s unpleasant social shortcomings if the results are worth it.Fred Kiel, founder of leadership firm KRW International, said that the successful jerk myth persists because we are taught to reframe toxic behavior as good leadership. “So they’re a little rough on people!   At least they’re taking action, they’re action oriented!’” he said. “It’s embedded in the wallpaper in business schools, it’s embedded in our psyches.”But multiple studies have found that there’s a limit to how far you can go being a jerk co-worker. Competent jerks can use their boorish bullying, narcissistic charisma, and manipulative mind games to get into leadership - but if they succeed it’s despite being a jerk, not because of it.Jerks ultimately hurt a company’s bottom-line because they lose companies time and money with turnover and hirin g and training costs. No one wants to work with a jerk, and we’ll flee to other companies to avoid them. A Harvard Business School paper calculated that avoiding a toxic hire can save a company an estimated $12,489.Study: We value likability over competenceWe dislike jerk co-workers so much that when faced with the choice between a competent jerk and a lovable fool, one study found that we’ll take the fool.  Tiziana Casciaro and Miguel Sousa Lobo studied more than 10,000 work relationships at small and big organizations to see how we pick work partners.“We found that if someone is strongly disliked, it’s almost irrelevant whether or not she is competent; people won’t want to work with her anyway. By contrast, if someone is liked, his colleagues will seek out every little bit of competence he has to offer,” the researchers said. The lessons of Facebook’s ‘Boz’The case of veteran Facebook executive Andrew “Boz” Bosworth shows how being a superstar can’t save you if no one wants to work with you. Bosworth revealed that he was almost fired when he was running one of the social media giant’s most successful products, Newsfeed, in 2015, because his “callously indifferent” actions had alienated his co-workers. This behavior resulted in him being pulled from the Newsfeed product. Bosworth said that when he demanded to know why he was being sidelined as a successful engineer, then-Facebook CTO Dustin Moskovitz showed him anonymous quotes of employees acknowledging his brains but also admitting they would not want to work on his team. For Bosworth, the feedback was a wakeup call.“I thought my job was to be right. I thought that was how I proved my worth to the company. But that was all wrong,” he wrote in a blog post. “My job was to get things done and doing anything meaningful past a certain point requires more than one person. If you are right but nobody wants to work with you, then how valuable are you really? How much can you reali stically expect to accomplish on your own?”The value of civilityWhat these stories show is that how you make your co-workers feel matters as much, and sometimes even more, than what you actually accomplish at a company.Working on a successful team means you prioritize civility and congeniality as much as deliverables and deadlines, because being a jerk genius will certainly get you noticed - but that attention can sour into notoriety and sometimes even job-ending failure.
