You might be rotating into another zone where you have a great deal of aptitude from that Masters qualification you simply achieved, you have fundamental abilities or possibly you have considered the point as an afterthought and now you need to apply it. Your next career move Get a mentor

Your next career move Get a mentor Employees at every level stand to benefit from having a mentor. Follow these tips to find â€" and get maximum value from â€" your next career coach. Learning firsthand about a role you hope to some day fill, discovering how to navigate unwritten company or industry rules, deciphering the ins and outs of office politics, and gaining introductions to valuable new contacts within your field â€" these are just a few of the many benefits of being mentored. In fact, according to a recent survey by temporary staffing firm Accountemps, 86 percent of more than 2,220 chief financial officers polled said that having a mentor is important for career development. So what can you, as the mentee, do to ensure you get the most out of a mentoring relationship? From finding the right guide to nurturing the relationship to knowing when to move on, the following advice can help. Find the right mentor If your company has a formal mentoring program, pinpointing a suitable mentor may be a piece of cake. If not, you’ll need to do a bit of legwork to find the right mentoring match. Bill Driscoll, district president for Accountemps, suggests you start by assessing what career paths interest you and identifying what areas you could use the most help in. “Not only will this give you an idea about who to tap as a potential mentor, it will also give that person a clue about what to focus on if they choose to take you on as a mentee,” he explains. “It’s also important to take into account the connections you could possibly gain through a mentor; after all, in today’s workplace, networking is crucial.” While securing a mentor within your organization means your mentor will be able to speak to specific challenges and help your in-house job prospects, Driscoll gives good reason to consider broadening your search beyond the borders of your current workplace. “If you want to be able to speak freely about on-the-job challenges, a mentor who doesn’t work for your company â€" say, someone you meet at a conference, seminar, or business lunch, whom you admire in a professional capacity â€" could, in some cases, be a better choice.” Having identified a prospective mentor, Driscoll says that your best bet is to pitch them by email, rather than by phone or in person, so you can “put your case forward clearly, explain why you think they’d be an ideal mentor and give them time to consider your request.” If they agree to a meeting, use that opportunity to “outline why you find their insights valuable and what you hope to learn from them. Be sure to mention your commitment to learning and what you plan to bring to the relationship as the mentee.” Nurture the relationship Once you’ve secured a mentor/career coach, Driscoll encourages you to start getting the most bang for your mentoring buck right out of the gate by immediately setting goals for the relationship that will make it a successful venture. “Reviewing your goals every so often will help to ensure the mentorship is working,” he adds. “If not, adjust your objectives and refocus.” Next, book regular meetings with your mentor. “A phone call or coffee date once every week or two for a simple conversation in which you can discuss your work experiences, plans, and skills development will do the trick if you both have busy schedules,” Driscoll suggests, adding that, if time allows, you can agree to attend meetings, conferences and other professional events together. “You can also shadow your mentor at work or exchange and discuss written materials like your resume or articles of interest.” Whatever you do, don’t forget to express your gratitude to your mentor â€" directly and indirectly. “Be respectful of their time and avoid canceling meetings or not following through on leads that they give you,” Driscoll cautions. “Your mentor is likely to give a lot more than you do in the relationship in terms of time and contacts. Be sure to regularly express that you value and appreciate their guidance.” Know when it’s time to move on Whether you’ve moved on to a new phase in your career or feel that regular meetings with your mentor aren’t as beneficial as they once were, there will likely come a time when ending the mentoring relationship and staying in touch by other means could be the best decision for both you and your career coach. Since first and last impressions are often equally impactful, Driscoll says, it’s best to end the relationship on a positive note. “Be clear and honest about why you want to end or change the nature of your relationship. If you’ve met your goals, let your mentor know how they have helped you, give clear feedback about what they did well, and what they might do differently and, most importantly, show your appreciation.” If you’d like to stay in touch, tell your mentor that you would enjoy seeing them for lunch or dinner every once in a while. Even though the mentoring relationship may be over, a former career coach â€" especially one with whom you remain on good terms â€" may very well continue to provide you with valuable guidance, leads and assistance in achieving your professional goals.

Earlier examination into these sort of intercessions found that it would build consciousn ess of sex inclination and encourage a feeling of having a place for the ladies who took it. Prior to the mediation, the two gatherings in the examination were employing about 33% of ladies. Why Resumes Are Still Important For Job Seekers - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Why Resumes Are Still Important For Job Seekers - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career [Sponsored: This post is brought to you by Hloom, a site offering free templates] There is a lot of hype about how resumes are going to die out with the advent of social networking sites. I have actually plead guilty to have written several articles about the death of resumes in the past. The reality, especially with larger companies, is that a resume is still extremely important. Companies have HR databases that store resumes that they select from. If your resume isnt in their system, then you have almost no chance of getting a job with that company unless you are the son or daughter of the CEO. A lot of resumes are written on the same templates that colleges have given out for decades. By using the same templates, you cant stand out in the recruiting process. A resume should clearly position you as someone who is best fit for the job you are applying for. It should be custom for each job and company that you apply to. A resume is a story about yourself and by customizing your resume, you can tell the best story possible to connect with the right job. I recommend that you list your accomplishments first on your resume, then your most recent experience and then safe your education and extra curricular activities to the end. Your job with your resume is to eliminate the perceived risk of hiring you from the employers standpoint. This means you have to front load all the best projects youve done. Valentine’s Day Easy Ways To Say ‘I Love You’ It’s under two weeks until Valentine’s Day guys it’s time to start panicking. The good news is that this year, you don’t have to stress out about how to make the day special for her, as we’ve got you covered. The other day we shared a post about gift ideas any girl would love. Now we’re going to be talking about those cute little things you can do to make her day even more special. To top last year’s Valentine’s Day, here’s what you need to do: Make her card Don’t buy her a card, get creative and make one instead. It might not be as perfectly finished as a shop bought card, but she’ll love it even more because of the time and effort you’ve put into it. Anyone can go out and pick a Valentine’s card, but it takes someone special to create their own. The good news is that even if you’re not a creative person, you can still design a beautiful card. The best thing to do is go online and get some inspiration and then use that inspo to come up with a card idea. If you can’t draw or paint, using photos to create it can work just as well. If you’re really struggling with making her card from scratch, you could always use a card design service to create it. (Have a browse online, you’ll find plenty to choose from.) Spoil her with a delicious breakfast If you’re a good cook, why not treat her to breakfast in bed? What’s more romantic than that? Make her whatever she likes, be it coffee and pastries, blueberry pancakes or a fry up, it doesn’t matter. Oh and don’t forget to make the tray look all pretty with a little vase of flowers, her card, and a cute coaster. (Just don’t spill the food or her coffee all over her card!) Don’t worry if you’re not a good cook, you can always go out for breakfast instead. Do the two of your have a favorite breakfast place? If so, why not take her there for a yummy breakfast and some relaxing one-on-one time? Plan a day out If the two of you are lucky enough to have the day off, plan a day out. This doesn’t have to be anything expensive or extravagant it can be if you can afford it, but it doesn’t need to be. Valentine’s Day is about showing the person you love how much you care about them; it’s not about how much you spend. How about heading to your nearest city for a day of exploring? Or what about going for a day trip to the beach what’ more romantic than a beach stroll? What about going to see a movie at your local cinema? There are so many ways that you spend the day, what you do is up to you. Just remember that the most important thing is to spend time together as a couple. Treat to a fancy night in Instead of heading out for dinner, why not plan a cozy night in? On Valentine’s Day, all the restaurants are crazy busy, which means that your meal is often more stressful than romantic. Beat the crowds and spend Valentine’s Day at home, and treat your girl to a homemade romantic meal. Treat it like you would a real date, lay the table beautifully order some roses from Jephry Floral Studio and place them on the table. Dot scented candles around, sprinkle a few rose petals and do everything that you can to make the setting magical. Oh and tell your partner to dress up as if she was going out, to make the night even more special. For the meal, come up with a range of dishes that you know she’ll love. If you don’t feel confident making them yourself, perhaps you could buy them ready done from your local grocery store. Plenty of stores will be offering Valentine’s Day meal deals, with ranges of fancy foods, so make sure to check these out. Want to make Valentine’s Day extra special for her? Take note of the ideas above, and you can do. Image Source; Image Source; Image Source; Image Source

Personal Branding Interview Lowell Heddings - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Lowell Heddings - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Lowell Heddings, who is better known online as the How-To Geek and is a part-time writer for Lifehacker. In this interview, Lowell talks about his blog, the significance of being a geek in social media, and why personal branding is important to him. You started the website How-To Geek back in 2006. Who is your primary audience on the site? Do you have to be a geek already to understand the how-tos? Our audience is very broad weve got the regular person that just wants to fix some computer problems and learn a few new things all the way to the more tech-savvy reader that likes to read about cool customization tips. We try to use pictures to illustrate how to accomplish a certain task, so even if you have no idea what you are doing, you can still usually follow along and figure it out. When I started the site back in 2006, it was nearly impossible to find any guides that told you how to do things and also used pictures sure, you could find how-to videos, but those can be such a pain since you have to constantly pause the video to do the next step. Thats why we decided to lay things out more like an instructional guide, and the results speak for themselves. What kinds of things can I learn from the How-To Geek? Weve got articles covering how to do many things in Windows, Microsoft Office, and other similar topics but this year weve started hiring part-time writers and were broadening the scope. We want to cover every topic that a regular person would be interested in, from working with digital images and videos to staying safe online and of course, well still have all our geeky customization tricks. Is there an advantage to being a geek in social media? Honestly Im not much of a social media player. Ive gone the opposite direction we pride ourselves in writing content that is so useful that it has no place on Digg amidst all their worthless random nonsense. Instead, our readers tell their friends and family about our site, they subscribe because the content helps them, and they dont feel intimidated because we try to be as friendly as possible. I recently wrote a blog post about the problems with being branded a Social Media Expert. Have you run into any problems? Since Im the exact opposite of a social media expert, Id say that I definitely have no problems in this area our site is doing very well. Honestly, I think the old-school method of creating a great product that people want still applies in the internet age, and too many of the so-called social media experts forget this. How is personal branding important to you? Branding is truly important. The How-To Geek site is represented by a smiling cartoon face thats hard to forget, and we try and keep everything friendly and helpful, all the time. Its the ingredient that takes a great product and makes it profitable. Youll notice that Im not branding myself the site isnt about me, its about helping the reader. Im happy to sit quietly in the background and watch the site grow. - Lowell Heddings, better known online as the How-To Geek, is the founder and chief geek behind the How-To Geek website, a part-time writer for Lifehacker, and a full-time programmer at a small research company. After years of furiously working by himself and spending every waking hour in front of a computer, he has finally learned to delegate and train a team of very helpful people to assist him because even greater challenges are out there, and the How-To Geek needs to take the game to the next level.

Career Pivot When in Crisis, Is a Bad Idea - Career Pivot

Career Pivot When in Crisis, Is a Bad Idea - Career Pivot Career Pivot When in Crisis, Is a Bad Idea Copyright: solerf / 123RF Stock Photo When you are in crisis mode it is often one of the worst times to make big career decisions. I was contacted by a 50+ year woman this last week about the uncertainty in her career. She had spent 15-20 years in a dying industry, print media, and had been working on pivoting her way out of it for a while. She had transitioned her print media sales and marketing skills into a completely different industry and had held a variety of full-time and contract positions. All of these positions came to an end due to the business failing or the function was outsourced overseas. Then the triple whammy hit She lost her job due to outsourcing Her fiancé’s home was flooded by one of the recent hurricanes Her impending marriage was postponed due to the chaos caused by the hurricane With all of this going on, she was definitely in crisis mode. She was sick of what she was doing and had no idea what to do next. She asked me if she should take a bold step and move into a totally new direction? She did not know what direction but just a new one. My response was NO! Moments of Clarity This woman was experiencing multiple instances of moments of clarity. Moments of Clarity are wonderful events to reflect on to understand what is really important to you in your life. When these compound on one another and they are all negatives (not all moments of clarity are negative) then it is easy to go into crisis mode. When we are in crisis mode, this is usually a bad time to make big career decisions. Career decisions in the 2nd half of life should be done thoughtfully. It is very easy to suffer from what I call MSU (Make Stuff Up) disorder when we are in crisis. Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Multiple times in my learning and development career I have had to refer back the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs. Listen to the most recent episode Maslow’s hierarchy ofneedsis often portrayed in the shape of a pyramid with the largest, most fundamental needs at the bottom and the need forself-actualizationand self-transcendence at the top. â€" Wikipedia In order to fulfill the higherneeds, you need to have the lower level needs met. You will need to haveenough food to eat, a dry safe, place to sleep and a sense of belonging. It is only when you have the bottom 2 or 3 levels fulfilled before you want to take on a Career Pivot. Get a Job Like You Had Before I told her that she needed to get out of crisis mode first. The way to do that was to find a job, a steady income and safe place to live. The key was to think of this as a 1 or 2-year gig. Similar to the what I wrote about in my last post,Find a Problem to Solve. That Will Lead to a Job, she needed to do a good job but not get invested into it. She was fearful that if she took a job like before, she would get absorbed into it and never make time to find what fulfills her. In other words, she will eventually work herself into crisis again. Find an Accountability Partner I told her to find an accountability partner that she can check in with on a weekly basis. This will help her keep her next job in focus and not let it suck her in. This is no different than a study or a work out partner. Find someone who is willing to hold you accountable. You might have to pay them. This might be seeing a psychologist or a life coach. Stair Step Out In Taylor Pearson’s book,The End of Jobs: Money, Meaning and Freedom Without the 9-To-5Taylor talks about stair-steppingto the next thing. That is to keep your day job but start a side endeavor that you can grow. When the side endeavor grows large enough to provide you an income you step out of your day job. The first step is to figure out what that side endeavor might be. Get Out of Crisis Mode First Sometimes we need to make compromisesand return to jobs or careers that we want to leave in order to create the platform to assist us to move on. Making big career decisions when you are in crisis is a bad thing. Have you done this? How did it turn out? Marc Miller Like what you just read? Share it with your friends using the buttons above. LinkedIn Power Users for a More Powerful Job Search - CareerEnlightenment.com

LinkedIn Power Users for a More Powerful Job Search Before we get started, I would like to apologize to Derek Weeks for the quality of the video. This was my first time recording a Skype conversation, so the video and audio arent great. Actually, by the end the voices dont quite sync up. (Yes, I am a cheapskate and used the free trial version of Call Record, and yes, I did eventually pay the $20 for a license.)   He discusses a hugely powerful technique that will allow you to get in touch with your target companys customer base so that you can add real value to your conversations during an interview. Imagine being able to say, Well, Ive had several conversations with your customers and they love your product features. He tells how he averted disaster by finding the dirty laundry on a company that wanted to hire him thus avoiding a potentially career-killing move. This illustrates how important it is to find out if your target company is actually a fit for you.

How to Answer Questions About Your Salary Requirements

How to Answer Questions About Your Salary Requirements This is the third in a series of six posts on salary negotiation published in partnership with PayScale.com. It’s true that you can look on PayScale to figure out the going range for a job, but you can never guess how much the company values the position for which they are interviewing you. So don’t give the first numberâ€"because if you request a salary lower than the range for the position, the interviewer will say nothing, and you’ve just lost money. You want the interviewer to tell you the range for the position, because then you can focus on getting to the high end of the range. But you can’t work to the high point if you don’t know it. When there are two good negotiators in the room, each person will try to get the other to give the first number. Each time you deflect the question, the interviewer will try again. Your goal is to outlast the interviewer until they finally tell you the salary range for the job. Here is how to respond: Question: What salary range are you looking for? Your Answer: “Let’s talk about the job requirements and expectations first, so I can get a sense of what you need.” That’s a soft answer to a soft way to ask the question. http://www.payscale.com/js/psextension-min.js?1 http://www.payscale.com/syndication/start_large_v3r.aspx?instance=1js=1v=1af=job=city=state=country=United%20Statestextcolor=333333backgroundcolor=a5d34c Accurate, real-time salaries for thousands of careers. Question: What did you make at your last job? Your Answer: “This position is not exactly the same as my last job. So let’s discuss what my responsibilities would be here and then determine a fair salary for this job.” It’s hard to argue with words like “fair” and “responsibilities”â€"you’re earning respect with this one. Question: What are you expecting to make in terms of salary? Your Answer: “I am interested in finding a job that is a good fit for me. I’m sure whatever salary you’re paying is consistent with the rest of the market.” In other words, I respect myself and I want to think I can respect this company. Question: I need to know what salary you want in order to make you an offer. Can you tell me a range? Your Answer: “I’d appreciate it if you could make me an offer based on whatever you have budgeted for this position and we can go from there.” This is a pretty direct response, so using words like “appreciate” focuses on drawing out the interviewer’s better qualities instead of her tougher side. Question: Why don’t you want to give your salary requirements? Your Answer: “I think you have a good idea of what this position is worth to your company, and that’s important information for me to know.” You can see the pattern, right? If you think you sound obnoxious or obstinate by not answering the question, think of how he feels asking the question more than once. Also, by the time the interviewer has asked two or three times, the interviewer will know that hiring you means having a tough negotiator on his teamâ€"another reason to make you a good salary offer! 5 Things To Consider Before You Take That Management Job - Work It Daily

5 Things To Consider Before You Take That Management Job - Work It Daily At first glance, accepting a management job can seem like a no-brainer â€" you have the inside track on what’s going on at the office, you get to delegate tasks and, hopefully, your paycheck gets fatter. Related: 6 Ways To Prepare For A Management Job But before taking over that corner office, ponder these five questions about other matters that go along with assuming a higher title. 1. Do You Want That Much Responsibility? Leaders may get much of the glory for success, but they also get much of the blame for failure. Are you prepared to handle the stress of budgets and deadlines, to scramble to make things right when one of your charges shows up late or makes a mistake, and to be the one who must find a way to appease a fussy client or an impatient higher-up? 2. Can You Handle Conflict? Pete Friedes, former CEO of the international human resource consulting firm Hewitt Associates and co-founder of Managing People Better, notes that people who end up unhappy in management often “can’t stand the conflicts inherent in managing â€" confronting poor or marginal performers, putting up with all the excuses, trying to meet the various needs of the employees, insisting on excellence and dealing with bad behavior.” If the thought of being the one who fills out performance evaluations, mediates office squabbles, and reads the riot act to underachievers makes you queasy, maybe management isn’t for you. 3. Do You Prefer To Work On Your Own? By its nature, managing involves being around others much of the time. An introverted personality or simply a preference for focusing solely on your own work may lead to discomfort or discontent as a manager. “Taking a management job when it isn’t a good fit with your personality will most likely result in your losing confidence in yourself and not doing a good job,” Friedes warns. “Accepting an individual role when that is a better fit will be much more likely to achieve job satisfaction and self-confidence.” 4. Are You Ready To Be Fodder For Water-Cooler Conversation? Becoming “one of them” can affect how others perceive you, and redefining your office relationships to adjust to the new social structure can be difficult. “When people take a management job, they are really changing careers. But they don’t realize this,” says Alan Vengel, a consultant on workplace issues and author of Twenty Minutes to a Top Performer and The Influence Edge. “All the relationships they’ve had with their colleagues will now be changed. Management considers them part of management and on the management team. Colleagues consider them part of management and no longer part of their team. So, the people you’ve been having lunch with, drinking your coffee with, complaining about the boss with, are no longer accessible to you. You really lose a support group. People look at you and treat you differently.” 5. How Would The New Position Change Your Life On The Whole? Lastly, take to heart Vengel’s notion of moving up to management as being a career change. Are you ready for it? How might longer hours, additional stress, and perhaps the need to travel for work affect your family and personal life? Just as if you were considering a new job at a different company, weigh the pros and cons of the management position to see if it is the right move for you.
